Frequently Asked Questions: At-Home and In-Person Ketamine-Assisted Psychotherapy (KAP)
What is Ketamine-Assisted Psychotherapy (KAP)?
KAP combines the administration of ketamine—a dissociative anesthetic—with guided psychotherapy to support mental health healing. While ketamine is FDA-approved for anesthesia, its off-label use for conditions like depression, anxiety, and PTSD has shown promising results under clinical supervision.
Is at-home KAP legal and safe?
Yes. Ketamine may be prescribed legally by licensed medical providers for off-label use. Our at-home model adheres to federal and state regulatory guidelines. All medications are prescribed by licensed clinicians and delivered through certified pharmacies. Safety is ensured through a combination of medical screening, supervision by a KAP Therapist, and the presence of a trusted adult (your KAP Companion).
What is the role of the KAP Therapist and KAP Companion?
Your licensed Therapist is present with you virtually or in-person throughout the entire session—from administration through recovery—to monitor your experience and provide therapeutic guidance. Your KAP Companion (virtual sessions), a trusted friend or family member, is physically present to ensure your safety and comfort, but does not participate in the therapy itself.
Who qualifies for at-home KAP?
Eligibility is determined through a thorough medical and psychological assessment conducted by a Licensed Medical Professional at Journey Clinical. Individuals with unstable cardiovascular conditions, active substance use disorders, or symptoms of psychosis may not be appropriate candidates. If you qualify, a licensed provider will develop a personalized treatment plan for you.
How does a typical session work?
Sessions begin with a check-in with your Therapist. Once ketamine is administered, you’ll enter a guided inner experience lasting 45–90 minutes. Your Therapist remains online or in the office with you the entire time, working in tandem with your KAP Companion for virtual sessions. Once the effects wear off, you’ll engage in a private integration session to process and reflect on the experience.
Will I be conscious during the ketamine session?
Yes. While ketamine induces a non-ordinary state of consciousness, you will remain awake and communicative. Many clients describe feelings of dissociation, introspection, or spiritual insight.
Who prescribes the ketamine and how is it delivered?
A licensed medical provider, such as a physician, psychiatric nurse practitioner or psychiatric physician assistant, will evaluate your clinical needs and prescribe the appropriate ketamine dosage. Medications are dispensed by a licensed pharmacy and shipped directly to your home in accordance with safety protocols.
What are the risks and side effects?
Side effects may include dizziness, nausea, increased blood pressure, and dissociation. These effects are typically short-lived and monitored closely. Serious side effects are rare but addressed in the informed consent process prior to starting treatment.
How many sessions will I need?
Treatment plans are individualized. Most clients begin with a series of 4–6 sessions, with ongoing evaluation to determine the appropriate duration and frequency of care.
Is this treatment covered by insurance?
Ketamine therapy for mental health conditions is not currently covered by most insurance plans, as it is considered off-label. However, we will bill your insurance for the psychotherapy, but we are not able to bill for Ketamine administration time. Each Ketamine administration session has one hour of psychotherapy that is billable. The amount of insurance reimbursement will determine your out-of-pocket expense which may be minimal cost to you depending on the insurance reimbursement. HSA and FSA funds are often eligible for use.
How is my confidentiality protected?
All communications, documents, and virtual sessions are conducted using secure, HIPAA-compliant platforms. Your privacy is a top priority, and we follow all federal regulations and ethical standards for confidentiality.
